Family homelessness isn’t distant — it’s here in West Michigan.
Thousands of families in West Michigan are one crisis away from losing their home. A layoff, medical emergency, or sudden rent increase can be all it takes to quickly push hardworking families into homelessness.
Safe shelter, long term housing solutions, and supportive services give families a path out of crisis and the chance to rebuild with dignity. Together, our community can ensure every family has a safe place to call home.
What is family homelessness?
Family homelessness forces parents and children into unsafe, unstable living situations that often remain hidden. Many remain out of sight, relying on relatives, sleeping in cars, or moving constantly to avoid the streets. The consequences hit fast. Kids fall behind in school, families face health challenges, and a child’s sense of safety begins to fade.

What causes family homelessness in West Michigan?
Family homelessness is complex, but the leading causes in our community are clear:
- Lack of affordable housing. In Kent County, a single parent must work more than 75 hours a week to afford a modest two-bedroom rental.
- Job loss or underemployment. Families living paycheck-to-paycheck are often just one emergency away from losing their home.
- Unexpected bills. Medical debt, car repairs, or childcare costs can quickly destabilize a household.
- Generational poverty and systemic inequities. Long-standing barriers make it harder for some families to access housing and resources.
- Racial disparities. In 2019, 1 in 6 Black children in Kent County experienced homelessness, compared to 1 in 135 white children.
