Keeping Families Safely Housed

Early Intervention That Protects Families

When parents and their children are at risk of losing their home, the stress can be overwhelming. Job loss, medical emergencies, or unexpected bills can quickly create a housing crisis. Family Promise steps in early to prevent families from entering shelter, protecting both parents and children from the trauma of displacement.

How the Program Works:

  • Intervention Before Eviction: If a landlord is preparing to evict a family, Family Promise works directly with them to find a solution that keeps the family in their home.
  • Temporary Housing Support: For families already staying with relatives or friends, Family Promise assesses if the living arrangement is safe and workable, then provides additional support to make it sustainable.
  • Personalized Case Management: Our team connects families with resources such as financial assistance, community support, and guidance to stabilize their housing.
  • Child-Focused Support: Minimizing stress on children is central to our approach, ensuring that they continue to thrive in school and at home during difficult times.

Early Childhood Services:

Young children experience homelessness differently than adults. Family Promise provides specialized support for kids, including:

  • Educational Resources: Access to preschool programs, tutoring, and enrichment activities.
  • Social-Emotional Support: Counseling, play therapy, and group activities to help children process stress.
  • Healthy Development: Support for physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, ensuring kids continue to thrive even in times of housing instability.

What Families Receive:

Family Promise of West Michigan is a community-driven nonprofit helping families overcome housing crises with dignity and compassion. We prevent homelessness, provide emergency shelter, and help families build a future filled with stability and hope.

Impact & Outcomes

Family homelessness means parents and children don’t have a safe, stable place to live. It’s not always visible — many families double up with relatives, sleep in cars, or move from place to place before turning to shelter. Homelessness isn’t just about housing. It disrupts education, health, and a child’s sense of security.
